The Intern Diaries: Tegan

Posted on
My name is Tegan and I am an intern at Harvey Labels. I graduated from Flinders University and TAFE SA last year after I completed a Bachelor degree in Fashion. After graduating, I threw myself into two retail jobs but was always on the lookout for fashion jobs in Adelaide. One day I came across a post on Instagram advertising for Interns at Harvey Labels. I had previously met Mim through the fashion industry, so I was very excited to get a chance to work with her.

During my three months here, I have learnt so much. The team at Harvey Labels have been so supportive and welcoming. I also had the privilege of interning with a woman named Kat who is currently studying the same fashion degree. Friday’s were the day I looked forward to the most, sitting down with the team, working on ideas and eating chocolate.

Throughout the internship I have worked on sketching trade samples on Illustrator, writing blog posts, receiving new stock just before NYFW and having to size, steam and write descriptions for all. Every time I came here, the first thing to do would be to upload a story to Harvey's Instagram. Instagram is a huge aspect of the company, I was learning how to work the angels and make the garments stand out. Some days I had to model, and it was fun, but very tiring work!

One day we all sat down together and sorted through fabrics for the upcoming seasons, we sketched new ideas and forecasted styles. That was probably one of the best days because I felt like we were all contributing to upcoming collections. The other half of Harvey Labels, Georgia, is the sales guru. As I passed my first month of my internship I got to create my own electronic daily mail (EDM) and send it out. I was so excited to be using a part of my degree that I did not think I would get to use.

New York Fashion Week was a very exciting time, even in Adelaide, we threw a little party in store with champagne and discounts! As an intern we did some prep via blog posts, Instagram and getting the stock ready for orders.

Seeing how a company runs and how Mim communicates with her colleagues, business partners and manufacturers overseas is truly inspiring. She is a humble and down to earth person and I could not have asked for a better three months. Mim, Georgia, Taylah and Kat have been the best company every Friday and I am so happy to have made some new friends, especially within the fashion industry.

As for me, I would like to work with a designer or fashion company next. Whether it be in Adelaide or interstate. I would also like to have a small side business where I just make clothes for friends and family! I am happy where I am at the moment in life and cannot wait to see where the future takes me.
