Australian Bushfires

Australian Bushfires

Australia is currently experiencing catastrophic bushfires throughout the country. The statistics are staggering and consequences seem endless, but the Australian community is standing together during this hard time.

Whether scrolling through social media, turning on the TV or waking up to smoke hazes blanketing our cities; the Australian bushfires cannot be ignored.  Since September the nation has been ravaged by megafires engulfing numerous towns and destroying over ten million hectares of our beautiful country.

As brave men and women risk their lives to protect our country, the statistics continue to shock and sadden us. Around 6000 buildings have already been destroyed or damaged, including over 2,000 homes. At least 26 people have died in the bushfires and threats remain as the fires continue to devastate our communities. This bushfire season is said to be the worst in memory, affecting various regions of NSW, parts of Eastern and North-Eastern Victoria and multiple other states. In our home of South Australia, some of our most beautiful and unique areas on Kangaroo Island, in the Adelaide Hills and on the Yorke Peninsula have been destroyed.

Much of the damaged land has been home to Australia’s precious wildlife and estimates tell us that 1.25 billion native animals have perished in the fires. These are heartbreaking figures as the threat will not subside quickly, with catastrophic summer weather predicted to continue.

Skies have been tinted blood red and people are stranded on beaches, desperately trying to find respite. With such tragedies becoming daily headlines, we have seen Australians unite to provide support for the firefighters, victims and volunteers battling the bushfires and their effects. The generosity of the Australian and worldwide community has been inspiring and ignites a hope for healing.

Harvey the Label and Seeker Store are standing with all Australians in offering our support during this hard time. This weekend we are donating 100% of our online profits to bushfire relief. Half of this amount will be donated to the NSW RFS to support the hardworking Australians protecting us on the front-line. The other half will go to WWF’s Australian Wildlife and Nature Recovery Fund, to contribute to their efforts in saving wildlife and eventually restoring our lost forests.

As an Australian small business, we understand that small businesses in fire affected regions, that have been abandoned, avoided or destroyed have lost profits from what might be the busiest period of the year. Please remember these businesses when you’re planning a weekend away, ordering your next bottle(s!) of wine or spirits, buying fresh produce or looking for almost anything.

Rebuilding and moving forward could seem impossible for people and families whose lives have been turned upside down, but as a united front we are not helpless. One small act might feel insignificant, but multiplied by countless people can change, and save, our country.
